An ATC toy hauler owner in Arizona wanted to add solar panels to their 24 foot trailer. It did not have any solar on it. It also had a single factory 12 volt battery. They needed a solution that allowed them to run their furnace all night.
The Problems With Their Old System
The single 12 volt battery that came with the trailer did not offer enough capacity to keep their furnace running all night. It had no specifications printed on the label, and it’s anyone’s guess as to how many Amp Hours it provided. Their trailer did not have a generator either.
My Solution
I supplied them with a 150 AH AGM battery made by Lifeline. I also mounted two 350 watt, residential grade, solar panels on the roof, and connected it to a 100/50 MPPT solar charge controller made by Victron. I also wired circuit breakers between the charge controller and battery with the ability to turn power off to the tongue jack.
The 150 AH AGM battery gives them enough capacity to run their furnace for an entire night’s sleep. The 700 watts of solar easily recharges the battery. Meanwhile, the Victron 100/50 MPPT provides a reliable control system to recharge the battery properly and completely. I also installed Victron’s cellphone app so that the customer can monitor everything.
